In a recent study released by the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC), jobs requiring associate degrees are expected to increase at nearly twice than that of jobs not requiring a college education.

Concluding 12 years of research the US Department of Education has found that an online degree indicates a higher level of performance than traditional study.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 24, 2009 ) Miami, Florida – Recently, the SRI International for the Department of Education presented a 93-page report based on one of the hot topics these days i.e. online education.
Unexpected but true, the report concludes that students following an online educational program demonstrate a better performance as compared to students attending the traditional instructive programs.
The results of the report are based on the extensive research on online teaching against the usual classroom teaching from 1996 to 2008. Although some part of it was in K-12 settings, a greater part of the research was completed at the level of colleges and adult continuing-education programs of various sorts, ranging from medical instruction to the military training.
The analysis was based on the 99 studies dealing with points, determining which sort of education (online or class room) is suitable for student performance in the different educational courses. It then became apparent from the facts of those studies that on the average, students following a few or a number of courses online would possibly rank in the 59th percentile in terms of tested performance, whereas the average classroom student would score in the 50th percentile. Now, this assumption reflects a considerable amount of significant difference in both the learning systems.
According to Barbara Means, the lead author of the study and an instructive psychologist the study is actually meant to promote the fact that online study these days is far better than the conventional educational strategies. However, this in no way means that it is time to say farewell to classrooms. The main idea of the study is to promote online education at an advanced level for an improved and convenient educational system. And the reason behind online education’s success is the progress in technology and the addition of advanced online tools, which have together made online learning much better and easier.

In early 2009, the U.S. government purchased billions of dollars in federal student loans to fill the gap now that banks and private investors are not lending as much. How will this affect the future of the U.S. federal student loan program in 2009-2010?

Did you obtain a federal student loan during the 2007-2008 school year? If you did, chances are that the federal government now owns your loan. Starting in 2008, the federal government began purchasing as much as $500 million per week in federal college loans.
Why? Because, according to U.S. Secretary of Margaret Spellings, the United States government wants to insure that students continue to have access to federal loans. As a result of the credit crunch, numerous banks and lenders chose to stop handling federal student loans.
Fewer private investors have been available to guarantee these loans, which were previously marketed as security or investment packages. This is because the instability of the current economic market makes these loan packages much less attractive to private investors.
Because these private investors were no longer available, the U.S. government announced it had no choice except to step in and buy the loans. If the Department of Education is able to buy enough federal loans, the securities previously backing these loans can be made available to back federal student loans for other borrowers. The purchase, however, is designed to be only a short-term solution to the problem.
The anticipated long-term solution, according to Department of Education executives, is the implementation of a new program, designed as an improvement on the current federal loan system, is expected in the near future, according to the Department of Education. This program was announced in November 2008, but its effect on the current federal loan process remains to be seen.
“Students must learn the total tuition cost of their degree before they enroll,” said Sheila Danzig director of Degree.com a premier internet portal for online degrees and online learning. “Studies have found that students who inquire at three or more school end up paying less in tuition and getting more in aid than those that enroll in the first school they look at. Certainly, the United States treasury does not have limitless resources to purchase these loans. If the economic crisis continues into the 2009 school year, as seems likely at this point, the Department of Education will may have to request that Congress allot additional funds to guarantee 2008-2009 federal student loans. Depending on the extent of the crisis, this could also mean that, in future, fewer student loans may be available to borrowers.

Fact and Fantasy: What is Distance Learning?
You have probably watched hundreds of television or internet commercials urging you to get a degree from home. Mail flyers advertise online correspondence courses, claiming that you can get an instant degree with only a quick application and little effort. Do you really know the facts about what online degree completion really requires? Check your information and determine how much of the truth you actually know!
A number of different technologies are used in distance learning degree programs. Online undergraduate degree programs, for example, are held over the Internet. Most online learning experiences take place individually, as the student checks in, receives the assignment, and posts messages on the chatboard or interacts with classmates through email. At least one of these online degree courses, however, was held live in the virtual community of Second Life, a popular online website. Perhaps this will be the future wave of online education!
Other students have worked to earn their degrees by taking classes broadcast over television or pre-recorded on videotape. CD-Rom, cassette tapes, and FM radio have also been used to distribute education information. Before the arrival of the Internet, however, most people who wanted to earn a degree at home used old-fashioned mail to receive and return correspondence course materials. There was, of course, a much longer turnaround time. This process involved mailing the completed assignment to the professor, having it graded and approved, and receiving and completing the next assignment. Although dated, this option is still available through some universities.
