Single Mothers- You CAN Focus on your Career

The ability for mothers to focus on their careers is a necessity; more women need to feel as if they have the right to take control of their lives in every aspect. Online degrees can be the answer.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 21, 2010 )

Fort Lauderdale, FL
Since the 70s, women have been on a never ending crusade to assert their dominance in the world market. It’s been an ongoing struggle straddling that line between equal rights and overblown ego massaging. However, the truth is it’s always going to be a strange dynamic for women: fulfilling the role of mother while still being able to keep her social standing amongst the men just as impressive if not more so. As the new decade begins, it’s time to note the pros and cons of mothers focusing the bulk of their attention on advancing their careers as opposed to spending all of their time making the household function smoothly.

Pro: Women who have the guts to assert their authority in professional situations have an elevated sense of self. Their identities of women stretch far beyond the scope of cooking, cleaning, and bearing children. They have made themselves a force to be reckoned with, a dominant influence in the professional world. With this new found confidence, a woman (or any human being, for that matter) will be able to always be ruler of her domain, whether that be at home or the office.

Con: Sometimes women do tend to take themselves far too seriously as regards what I’m dubbing “The Cause”. The Cause is the case that all women rally behind: the right for women to stand up and take control of their lives away from the male dominated hierarchy that’s been oppressing the female influence for far too long. This never ending quest to perpetuate The Cause has left many women forgetting that the family is one of the most important aspects of their lives.

Pro: Women have every right in the world to expect to be treated as equals in the workplace. Therefore, women who want to continue to get a leg up on the corporate ladder are going back to school, earning well respected degrees from well respected universities. More and more women are investing in information technology degree programs, taking full advantage of the online option and earning education degrees online, getting as far ahead of the competition as they can so that they can make a better life for themselves.

Con: Women sometimes have this preoccupation with stamping out injustice everywhere without taking notice of the injustice that takes place in their own household. In an attempt to fight for the rights of women, they’re forgetting that their children have rights as well: the right to be a part of their mothers’ lives, the right to be raised without the stigma of becoming something less than what their mothers expect.

In the long run we don’t want mothers to ever feel as if they can’t go back to school, focus their energy on their careers. Quite frankly, there still aren’t enough women making comparable pay checks or holding positions of power. However, men and women need to remember that their need to conquer the world holds the lives of innocent bystanders in the balance.

Mother, Yes You May: Go Back to School. In fact you MUST.

Though things have progressed, the overarching ideal is that mothers will stay at home and take care of her children; it’s time for mothers to see that they have every opportunity to fulfill their dreams as well.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 20, 2010 ) Fort Lauderdale, FL

It’s a scary prospect, being a new mother, having this new life to which you must dedicate your entire existence. There’s nothing more exciting –and frightening– than being a new mother. The last thing any mother would ever consider is going to back to school to finish her education, or even to acquire a more advanced degree. However, there’s a bit of a problem with many people who find themselves leaving school prematurely in order to care for her family: vicarious living. Mothers have goals for their children, dreams of their success and immeasurable triumphs. However, many of those dreams are unfulfilled or unrealised dreams of the mother. And that’s when a great deal of problems can arise in a child’s life.

Mothers have, from the beginning of time, been encouraged to drop everything that they’ve ever done in order to fill their role as a nurturer, as the mother and caregiver of the children. The men, of course, have been encouraged to continue their roles as the ever ready, always providing patriarchal figure of the household –providing for the family financially. Though the tide has shifted a bit over time, the focus and general understanding is that women will remain at home in order to rear her children while the man will go out –hunting and gathering– to keep is family well provided for. Well, ladies, it’s time you knew that you don’t have to wait until your children are old enough to go off to college to begin entertaining the thought of going back yourself.

New mothers should never feel held back, their dreams deferred in hopes of rearing a child that will carry through with their visions of grandeur. Many new mothers have acquired an Associate’s degree, or at least finished the credit for such, prior to having their first child. However, there’s not much one can do professionally with a lower level degree –even the Bachelor’s degree has been outsourced for more impressive credentials. If you’re a new mother and you’re focusing all your attention on rearing a child that will follow through with what you found yourself incapable of doing, then you’re going to inevitably take a wrong turn and may end up forcing your child to choose a path that you may have not foreseen (which is perfectly fine in nearly all cases, except when the child has retained a great deal of resentment towards his or her parent).

Mothers, earning a Master’s degree or a Doctorate are not a far-fetched inclination. You have all the tools necessary and you can still stay at home with your children if you complete an online degree. If it’s the time that you’re concerned about, fear not. Degree.com, http://www.degree.com/ the Premier Internet Portal for Online Study, has made it possible for you to find a program that’s right for you. Professor Sheila Danzig, Director of Degree.com, has helped steer the website in the right direction as regards helping those who need it most. There’s no reason why a new mother shouldn’t have the same opportunities as their male counterparts. Go for it with all you’ve got and don’t be afraid to make yourself a success.

Why don’t more women don't get MBAs?

Women are less likely to acquire MBAs because of the many responsibilities woman have that men do not. Thus men continue to rise up the corporate ladder.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 14, 2010 ) Fort Lauderdale, FL

There are still only 13 female CEOs of major companies, up from four a few years ago. At that rate of advancement, it will take women until 2096 to reach parity with men.

The discovery that women have continued to gain unprecedented success in the business world, albeit the percentage of women enrolling in Business Schools having stagnated at 30% since the late 80s can be termed in no better way than – mind boggling.

The Forté Foundation came into being in 2001 under sponsorship of 21 companies (which include IBM, Ernst & Young, Goldman Sachs, American Express, among others) and 37 Business Schools – among them Columbia, Harvard, MIT, Wharton, and Chicago – with only one goal: to encourage more women to acquire college degrees which are business related and particularly – the MBA.

According to Sheila Danzig, founder of Degree.com, http://www.degree.com, the premier internet portal for online study, Forté also provides interested women with avid information ranging from, how to finance their graduate business degrees, to how to sharpen their math skills if they have become rusty along the way and how to know which business school is ideal for them.

Elissa Ellis Sangster, Forté’s executive director in an interview with CNNmoney admitted that there are quite a number of people that are very successful without an MBA, but was quick to add that the degree does give an individual a better edge. “For one thing, it gives you a great network of people who are in a position to support your career in the future, and it teaches you analytical and decision-making skills that are useful in any industry, so that you have the flexibility and the nimbleness to move easily from one role to another or one industry to another.” He concluded by saying that an MBA is a life investment and is quite handy in a recession.
The studies done by the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that the more educated you are, the more your salary is compared to some high school graduate and the less your chances of ever being unemployed. The Bureau revealed that by the end of 2009 the unemployment rate was slightly above 10% but for master’s degree holders, it’s 2.4%.

There are four main reasons as to why women MBAs are noticeably less than male. First, women are concerned about balancing work, school, and home-life responsibilities if they go back to school. Second, they don’t see many role models — female MBAs who are managing to juggle the roles mentioned prior to this point. Third, women express doubts as to whether they have the quantitative background and the advanced math skills to handle MBA courses. And fourth, they aren’t getting much, if any, encouragement from their employers to get an advanced degree.
These are valid concerns and that is why Forté addresses the above issues in their forums and online networks comprising of about 40,000 business women.

Can You Get A Degree for Life Experience? The Truth About Series.

Can life experience be turned into college credit? NO, but you can turn what you have learned in life into college credit.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 11, 2010 ) Miami, Florida

In this month’s Truth About Series, http://www.Degree.com, the premier online Degree portal, looks at college degrees and asks the question “Can you really get a degree for life experience?”

Unlike most “Truth About” questions this one has a simple one word answer. NO. Anyone who tells you that you can get a degree because for life experience has a phony degree that is a worthless piece of paper in his pocket that he is going to try to sell you from a degree mill.

However, you can get college credit and even a full degree based on what you have LEARNED at work, through independent study or readings, travel, life events, in your hobbies, volunteer works, etc. through exams such as CLEP and DANTES as well as through an assessment of prior learning (APL). Because adults are always learning college level knowledge outside the classroom, numerous accredited US Universities give credit when a student can show that what they have learned is equivalent to a course. Generally in the US the prior learning is assessed with what is called a “portfolio“. As a rule portfolios are expected to provide a college level course description from any college in the US. This presents the knowledge that is that is required to complete and pass that course and your knowledge is measured against that standard. This is followed by a narrative in which the student explains what was done in their life, what they learned including evidence to support what they learned, showing that they have learned what is normally taught in that class. A search for Portfolio assessment of prior learning and similar search terms should turn up many many fully accredited US programs. The portfolio process is time consuming and many students are looking for alternatives to prove their knowledge is equivalent to university level education.

Fully accredited Universities outside the US are also giving credit via APL with and without portfolio work for both undergraduate and graduate work. Often an administrator can make the assessment based on achievements, exams, certifications etc. without the portfolio work. While this saves the student a great deal of time the end result is essentially the same. The student receives credit for outside the classroom learning. One such university is the International University of Panama.
