Current Economic Market Spikes Value of Higher Education

Last year, the economists admitted it. The U.S. has been in a recession since early 2007. There’s no end currently in sight. Despite the stimulus packages and financial bailouts, Chrysler has filed bankruptcy and GM is close to the edge. Surprisingly, or not so surprisingly, this dim economic forecast has resulted in a marked spike in interest concerning higher education.

In fact, interest in online degree programs rose by about ten percent last quarter. This interest in distance learning reflects the national trend toward online education. Currently, more than 4 million persons are enrolled in distance learning degree programs, and this number only continues to rise.

The current economic crisis is also partly responsible for the increased interest in distance education. People are reluctant to leave stable job positions to go back to college and earn a degree. Online degree universities, however, allow people to finish their college educations without quitting their jobs and mortgaging their homes. With major corporations such as Microsoft, as well as many banking institutions, also reducing their workforces, people just aren’t taking chances with their financial security.

Higher education institutions, though, are reaping a benefit: More people are returning to school to sharpen their skills and cross-train for increased job security. Furthermore, interest is very high in areas such as nursing and other healthcare-related fields, where jobs are still available and personnel are in high demand. This trend toward enrollment in high-need fields will help to relieve the intense nursing shortage predicted by healthcare experts as the baby boomer generation reaches retirement.

Hopefully, economic experts and government officials will soon get the national economy back on track. In the meantime, people are banking their futures in higher educations. Sensible. Investing in personal improvement almost always pays off in the end. The challenge, however, is in bridging the financial gap during that transition.
