If you think that online high schools are primarily for troubled teens, think again. These distance education programs also offer excellent opportunities for students who are intellectually gifted, chronically ill, travel frequently, or who are interested in very specific educational experiences. Adult learners and students from some religious backgrounds may also find it easier to get their high school diploma online.
In the past, accreditation was a significant concern. Colleges and universities were not willing to accept many high school diplomas earned online because the schools were not properly accredited. Many top online college degree programs now offer accredited high school diplomas as well, eliminating the problem of finding a reputable school or institution.
For some students, socialization is a major concern. Some teens may find it more difficult to concentrate and focus on educational activities if they are not motivated by the presence and support of other students. Some, however, flourish in this setting. Because different people respond so differently to learning opportunities, understanding the needs of the student considering this type of education is critical for his or her success.
Finding a top online school that offers a high school diploma program can be challenging, but rewarding. Interestingly, many students who complete their high school programs online often decide to continue their education and earn a college degree at home. For these students, online learning seems to be the ideal path to excellence in higher education!

If you’re an avid “Law and Order” fan, chances are there is a little bit of the attorney in you. If you enjoy debates, and don’t mind public speaking, there may be more than a little bit of the lawyer inside you. Have you thought about getting your Juris Doctorate online?
The words “Juris Doctorate” are Latin in origin, and they refer to a graduate degree in Law. Many people don’t even know that it is possible to get a law degree through a distance education program. Although these college degree programs are rather unusual, it is possible to earn a degree online and become an attorney!
Law school is extremely competitive, and the best schools are almost impossible for all but the very best students with the highest GPAs to get into. Here’s a secret, though. You don’t have to enroll in the best university in the country in order to get your degree, or even to learn as much as you possibly can about your chosen career.
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get a J. D. Furthermore, the state bar exam (the test that you take in order to get your license to practice law) doesn’t care what university you attended, as long as the degree program is accredited! So get your juris doctorate online – and save the time, money and energy you would spend commuting back and forth to a college campus by getting a distance degree instead!

Twenty-three years ago, a young man’s family announced to the world that he had contracted AIDS through a blood transfusion. Ryan White died before he was able to get his high school diploma or begin a college degree program, but his legacy in the fight against the stigma experienced by people with AIDS lives on.
Two days ago, the House of Representatives passed a bill initiated by the Senate, and the President is expected to sign it into law. This bill reverses the automatic ban issued decades ago against people with AIDS who wish to visit or immigrate to the United States.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that thousands of people with AIDS will flock to the country, but it does offer some indication that Americans are less paralyzed by fear of individuals who are HIV positive. University enrollment could be affected by a small influx of foreign citizens, but it remains too early even to guess at this possibility.
I remember when frightened parents started an alternative school to prevent their children from attending with Ryan White. I remember also the tiny school in Indiana that welcomed him and shook his hand on his first day at a new school in 1987. Somehow, I don’t think that, even as ill as he was toward the end of his life, Ryan White would have chosen to earn a college degree at home.
I never met him, but I saw his face frequently on the news during those years. He looked like a young man who would never be afraid to stand for his ideals, and I had a great deal of respect for him. Not all of us, however, are called to as public a position as this young man. Further, many people with AIDS have too many health problems and spend too much time in the hospital to attend college degree programs.
For these people, the opportunity to earn a degree online is priceless. They can take online degree courses, and get an online Bachelor Degree in accounting, earn a business degree, or even get a computer science degree through a distance degree program. These individuals can work on their education when they are feeling well, and take time off from courses when their health becomes a struggle. In addition to health problems, the virtual interaction with peers and professors means that they don’t have to cope with illness-related stigma.
This new law won’t make the stigma attached to AIDS disappear overnight. It is one more step, however, in our society’s growth against unfair judgments and sanctions against people who live with AIDS. And, thank goodness for online degree universities, which offer these individuals an option to get an education without stigma, judgment, or emotional anguish.

Believe it or not, online degree universities struggle with certain ethical issues that are uniqe to online college degree programs. The ethical concerns voiced by both students and professors alike involve issues related to cheating, privacy, and the publication of educational materials online. Furthermore, top online schools have made the admirable commitment to making their distance education degrees universally accessible to all individuals, including those who are physically or cognitively challenged.
Cheating is often rampant among college students attending a traditional college or university. Students are so anxious to earn their college degrees that they often stoop to plagiarism or cheating on tests. Some online universities have attempted to address this problem through the use of open book testing, while others require students to be monitored. While neither of these suggestions is optimal, a more effective solution remains to be found.
Another difficulty faced by students taking online degree courses is the issue of privacy. Most distance learning degree programs use software that makes course content, such as outlines, student postings, and discussions private. Occasionally, however, information is made available to anyone searching. One of the problems with this is that many employers have taken to searching the internet to “dig up dirt” about prospective employees, and an unfortunate comment made while taking an online course could come back to haunt a student.
One other problem with online learning is the publication of education materials on the Internet. This can lead to copyright issues and disagreements between universities, professors, and students concerning who owns the rights to the information produced during an online degree course. While the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, which became law in 1998, has offered some protection, this remains a concern.
Students who plan to earn a college degree at home need to be aware of these issues and be cautious about their use of the internet for sending and receiving information. Academic integrity is still important, and it may fall primarily upon the student to maintain this difficult standard. While universities work to extend their course offerings to meet the needs of a wide variety of challenged students, the students themselves should remain aware of these current ethical issues in distance learning.

In 1989, when I was thirty years old I went back to school to get my Master’s Degree. At that time I had to commute a 90 mile roundtrip four days a week. I had to quit my job and take a part time position to have the time to go to school. I sold my house to pay my tuition. I was supporting a wife and two kids at the time and we struggled to get by. I didn’t have a choice then, but if I was going back to school today I would get my Master’s degree online from an online university.
Distance learning is a wonderful tool. It would have saved me valuable money, not having to commute every day. I would have saved hundreds of dollars back then, but think what the savings would be today with gas at $4 a gallon. Even with a car that gets 30 miles to the gallon, it would save $60 a week. Think of all the fun things you could do with an extra 60 dollars a week.
An online Master’s Degree would have saved precious time for family and friends and even allowed me to keep my full-time job. That would have made it a lot easier to pay for the extra schooling. A Distance Master’s Degree would also have allowed me to attend the online school of my choice. At the time, I really only had two schools to choose from because of where I lived.
Thinking of going back to school to get your Master’s Degree? It only makes sense to do it online with a distance learning program of your choice. Whatever your passion is, you can probably earn a Master’s Degree online in that field. The internet has done wonderful things for our society today and this is one of the best. A distance learning degree saves you time and money. Take advantage of it today.

Free to Earn a College Degree
Less than 150 years ago, more than half of the American population lacked the freedom to attend a university or get a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree. African-Americans couldn’t even apply to enter a college degree program. Although this supposedly ended with the Civil War, they continued to experience educational obstacles for the next 100 years.
Women also have encountered significant resistance to achieving dreams of a higher education. The first woman to become a doctor graduated from medical school less than 100 years ago. Today, medical college degree programs go above and beyond to enroll female and minority students.
Education has come so far in the last 40 years, and it is exciting to watch the trend continue as more students turn to online degree programs to earn a degree at home. Today, more students are choosing distance learning than ever before. Part of this is a reflection of the rising cost of travel.
A larger, perhaps more significant part, however, is that distance degree students want the freedom to control their own learning. They want to learn at their own pace, using learning styles that best suit them, rather than hearing lectures from professors who have taught the same classes for forty years without adding any new material.
Today’s students continue to seek new freedom in education. Those freedoms are waiting for them at online degree universities nationwide. Isn’t it time to earn your freedom – and take control of your learning?
